We've been building kiosks since the very first EMU ones
appeared in TICs (anyone remember that?). And we've learnt
a lot.
Basic things like where to put them (which sounds simple
but if you get it wrong…) and how to provide disabled
access. We've discovered that the best way to ensure our clients
get a seamless, resilient, first class service is to do it
all ourselves. Design and build the housing, develop our own
browser (the interfaces are web-based but are not like websites),
design our own interfaces (same rules as for websites), do
all our own installations and employ a team of 7 service people
across the UK (including Northern Ireland) to ensure that
they are well maintained and supported. Add to that complete
integration with our DMS software (if you want it) and we
believe we offer the best kiosk service for public sector
tourism on the market. And we keep on making them better.
We send people out into all weathers to watch users at the
kiosk. We learn what visitors want to do, and we make it even
easier for them to do it (like making the "footprint"
of the buttons bigger so they don't keep pressing the wrong
thing). Try www.roomcheck.co.uk/ni-kiosk/ni_kiosk.asp. This
is a web view on a Northern Ireland kiosk, running on Gulliver
data. (This is work in progress, a test site where we try
out different ideas, a good way to see what our latest thinking
is! Try www.roomcheck.co.uk/nn-kiosk/nn_kiosk.asp for a finished
one.)
